Some things in life are worth waiting for, even if it takes your whole life to see it with your own eyes. Do you remember the character called "Pepe Le Pew" from the children cartoon character of Looney Tunes? He was a skunk who was always falling for the poor little black cat with a bushy tail, minding its own business just walking down the street. Then out of nowhere, a bucket of white paint falls on it from a painter's scaffold above. The white paint would form a white streak down the back and tail of the black cat. It gave the cat the appearance of a skunk. Pepe Le Pew was a male skunk, which had a French accent and a lover boy attitude. He was always on the watch for his next female encounter. And of course you guessed it, he would see the black cat, which was marked up with white paint on its back and tail, thinking it was a female skunk. He would chase after the cat trying to prove his love for her. But the poor cat wasn't having it, especially after it got a whiff of his skunk's odor. The poor cat was scampering over itself trying to get away from the odor and Pepe Le Pew. It was real funny as a child! Lol!
I had never seen a real skunk in the wild or city until the other day. I was driving down a street, and I saw a mother skunk crossing the street with her four baby skunks. It was one of the most wonderful things I had seen. I couldn't help notice that a mother is a mother in behave no matter what species they are. As she crossed, she stopped in the middle of the road waiting for one baby skunk that was lagging behind. The first three were close to her and keeping up with her. But the last little one just was not making it. So, she stopped and encouraged the last one as if to say, "Now Bobby come on. Get your backside into it." Then she moved back to the front of the line leading them to the other side of the street. When she got to the other side of the street, she went back to encourage the last one again to continue moving across the street. She was shaking her head and twitching her nose. Then she walked back to the front and led them down through the parking lot. I was so excited they all made it across safely.
I had never encountered or seen live skunks in the city, especially not mama and babies. I thank God for this beautiful once in a lifetime sighting. But even more, I am thankful that I didn't upset the mother or her babies. I surely didn't want to get sprayed by her natural defense odor, that only God could love or another skunk. Also, I was so glad I was in my car. In any case, keep your eyes open as you move about in your surroundings, you never know what you might see.
